19. The Savages (2007)
dir. Tamara Jenkins
feat. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Laura Linney, Philip BoscoWe don’t have to go after him, Wendy. We’re not in a Sam Shepard play.
Jon and Wendy Savage are forced to accept responsibility for the father they’ve long forgotten when his live-in girlfriend dies and his mental facilities wane. A brother and sister constantly in competition must now come to terms with the abusive man who scarred their childhood and with each other in their disparate lives. Sublimely acted by Hoffman and Linney, Jon and Wendy are hyper-intelligent literature/writer snobs wrenched from the safety nets in which they’ve nested and turned to look at the sorry excuses they call their lives.

I want everyone to know that the Buffalo they depict in this film isn’t at all Buffalo. It’s somewhere far, far from Buffalo.
